Scarecrow Contest

Prizes: 1st - $25, 2nd - $20, 3rd - $15
Enter on Entry Day
  1. Maximum height 5 feet
  2. must be free standing
  3. must be family appropriate
  4. Entrant responsible for displaying scarecrow in assigned spot. Area must be cleaned when finished.
  5. No electricity provided
  6. No generators allowed

Bird House Contest

Construct your own bird house and drop it off at the DIY Building on Monday, August 15th, 2022. All bird houses must have a way to be hung on a Shepard's Hook. This contest is sponsored by the Douglas County Fair.

Quilt Block Contest Guidelines

Sponsored by: Lakes Area Quilters

Block Guidelines:

  • 12 ½” unfinished block
  • Pressed
  • Square your block to 12.5” on each side
  • If using a stabilizer, be sure it is soft & flexible
  • No 3D embellishments such as buttons.
  • Colors: Grey, Black, Teal, Cream
  • Theme: Any block pattern can be used.

Drop off: From August 2-12, you can drop off your blocks at a local quilt shop:

  • Dawn’s Quilt Shop in Alexandria
  • Community Vac & Sew in Alexandria

On Monday, August 15th, you may drop off your block in the DIY Building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Your Name and contact information should be securely fastened to the back of the block with 1 staple.

Blocks will be displayed at the Douglas County Fair in the Lakes Area Quilters space. Stop by during your fair visit to view all blocks and vote for your favorite. The maker of the block with the most viewer votes will be awarded a blue ribbon and a 1 year membership in Lakes Area Quilters.

Blocks will not be returned. The blocks will be assembled into quilt tops for The Honor Quilt program.

Barn Quilt Contest (Must Pre-Register)

Enter your barn quilt block(s) into the Contest to win prizes and a chance to have your barn quilt permanently installed at the Douglas County Fair!

What is a "Barn" Quilt Block?

• Quilt Blocks(s) can adorn barns, outbuildings, homes, businesses, sheds, etc.
• Quilt Block(s) must be visible from a road (to avoid trespass on your property).
• Quilt Block(s) must be complete and mounted on or painted directly on the structure.
• You must enter the contest to qualify for judging and prizes.
• Quilt Blocks are 4 Feet by 4 Feet painted on wood
• No logos. Design must translate to a sewn quilt block.
• “Barn” quilt blocks must be able to withstand the elements
• Entry must be received on Open Class Entry Day - Monday, August 15th, 2022.
• Make your “barn” quilt as weather proof as possible.
• Paint quilt block(s) on exterior plywood or MDF board. Both need a good primer; front, back and particularly heavy on the edges.

In addition to the contest prizes, the Douglas County Fair will be selecting several blocks for permanent installation at the Douglas County Fair! (If your block is chosen, the Douglas County Fair will offer you an additional $40 per 4x4 block to showcase your block year round at the Douglas County Fair!)

Table Decorating Contest (Must Pre-Register)

All supplies must be brought and set up on entry day. The exhibit should include a place setting consisting of dishes, silverware, linens and centerpiece. A meal menu mounted on a 8” x 10” poster (free standing) is also part of the entry. The display must be no larger than 30” square. An area will be provided with neutral color for entrants to exhibit a display.

Gift Basket Contest (Must Pre-Register)

Use your creativity to construct a special gift basket. It must include a variety of at least 3 miscellaneous baked goods.

Freaky Vegetable Contest (Must Pre-Register)

Bring in your most wild or freaky or large vegetable to enter into this contest. Any weird looking vegetable is able to be entered.
